B.Ed Colleges in Kolkata

For any one aspiring to be a teacher at the higher primary schools and high schools a B.Ed degree is a must after graduation. The subjects that a person is trained to teach depends on his graduation. A person from the science background is trained to teach physics, chemistry and mathematics, a commerce graduate is trained to teach economics and accountancy while an arts student can teach history, geography etc. This is more of a practical based course which enables the teacher to get an insight into the students mind, help develop a healthy learning atmosphere in the class and help in making things easily understandable to the students.

The eligibility for this course is a B.A/B.Com/B.Sc degree from a recognized university, in service teachers with 2 years full-time teaching experience on temporary/permanent basis in a primary secondary/higher/senior secondary school recognized by central or state government. The medium of the course can be both in English and Hindi.

Talking with respect to Kolkata which is also referred to as the “city of intellectuals” has a number of reputed B.Ed colleges running with the main objective to train competent and dedicated teachers equipped with skills required for effective teaching-learning; to help trainees achieve professional standards of work; to foster artistic, analytical and creative skills; to encourage personal growth and inculcation of moral and spiritual values and to develop in them a sense of responsibility, love and understanding for pupils

There are a number of private and government aided colleges in Kolkata offering this course. A regular course is of one year duration while a correspondence course is of a two year duration. The more reputed and famous colleges include Loreto College located in Park Street H.O which was established in 1912. But the B.Ed course got recognition from NCTE (National Council of Teacher Training) in 1998 with a B+ grading. Next comes AJC Bose College established in 1969 and located in Lala Lajpat Rai Sarani.

There are a host of other privately funded colleges like The Bhawanipore Education Society College located in Lala Lajpat Sarani, Scottish Church College located in Beadon Street, Rammohan College located in Raja Rammohan Sarani, Lady Brabourne College located in Circus Avenue, South Calcutta Girls College located at 72, Sarat Bose Road and Netaji Nagar College for Women located at Regent Estate. One of the government aided colleges is St. Xaviers College affiliated to the Calcutta University. It is equally popular with the local residents as well as people coming from outside. It has 100 seats in the B.Ed program with a full course fee of Rs 40000.

There are a few other lesser known colleges which promise a lot of growth in the near future. These include Shri Shikshayatan College, Calcutta Girls BT college located in Swinhoe Street. It has an intake of 100 students with a course fee of around Rs 27,000 and Sammilani Teachers Training College located in Mukundapur and affiliated to Calcutta University also having 100 seats and a fee of Rs 26,000.
